Learn How Horses Communicate in this Free Online Course for Youth

Adult offering too! Learn Together for a fun Family Day Experience!


Guelph, ON Feb. 6, 2024 - Do you love horses and want to understand them better? Do you want to learn how to read their body language, and the cues they give one another? If so, you might be interested in a free online course offered by Equine Guelph, the horse owner and caregiver’s centre at the University of Guelph.

This offering of the popular Horse Behaviour and Safety course, is designed for youth aged 13 to 17 who have an interest in horses and want to learn more about their behavior and communication. The course will run for free until March 31, 2024 and will cover topics such as:

1.    Horse Behaviour – Wild vs Stabled
2.    How Horses See and Hear
3.    Herd Behaviour – How Horses Interact with Each Other
4.    Horse Handling – Basic Safety Around Horses
5.    Rider/Helmet Safety
6.    Safe Trailering – Basics
7.    Fire Safety
8.    Safety around the Barn and Paddocks
9.    Returning from an Injury

Learn about horses together during Family Week!

Adults can ‘Learn Together’ during Family week!

Family day is Feb 19 (in most Canadian Provinces). Are you ready for some family fun? From Feb 12 - 23, the Adult offering of Horse Behaviour & Safety course for those over 18 will also be running. Have an adult family member log in and learn together! Make those future barn visits and even bigger bonding experience as you both learn more about horse language!

Both courses are delivered online through the Horse Portal, a user-friendly and flexible learning platform that allows participants to access the course materials anytime and anywhere.  No prior online learning experience is required.

“It is wonderful to see the enthusiasm for this program geared towards the equestrians of the future,” says Equine Guelph director, Gayle Ecker. “It is a perfect way for youth to fuel their passion and learn more about their favourite animal.  The opportunity to share the interest with a family member enhances the whole learning experience.”
